Please check out the Mugs offering I've put up! Mugs are 15% off till December 10th! These would make great Christmas gifts! Please remember, I have a policy that any profits from my work sold on DA goes to buy subbies for those who either cannot afford it, or those in countries where they have problems getting credit cards that are capable of international transactions. So if you buy a mug or 2 you're not only getting a really cool mug, you're helping out a fellow deviant!

Hi Everyone!

First I'd like to apologize for flooding your deviations a few days ago... I really try not to do that, but I had (and still have) several shots from the beach that I needed to process and put up. Thanks to everyone who :+fav:ed my work. I really do appreciate it!

Most of you who are reading this know by now that I tend to think philosophically regarding photography. I can get pretty intense about the subject and what I personally believe we as photographers try to accomplish in our craft, and how that might change from subject to subject.

Sometimes we try to show the stark reality of a particular scene. Sometimes we try to show the subtle beauty and softness of a rose. Sometimes we find interesting textures in simple everyday objects. Others try to show us the smallest details of a fly's wing. Our efforts are as varied as we are.

This last week, I put up some sunset shots that I did while we were at Mexico Beach, Fl. These are not all the shots that I have left to process. ;-) One of the things that struck me about the photos, was that they showed how our minds can play tricks on us... We expect a sundown to be like most every other sundown. In reality, no two are exactly the same. Some are just flat surrealistic. I tend to lean towards realism in my shooting. I don't use a bunch of filters and most corrections I do are to bring back the actual scene as I saw it. Remember, the human eye can see about a 15 stop range, and the camera can only record about 5 stops, so we generally lose when it comes to the low light area. Anyways, it struck me how nature can always seem to surprise me.

Another thing you'll find, is that I have this strange fixation for trying to capture birds in flight. Birds fascinate me. They are so graceful. So I hope you don't mind seeing them. Unfortunately I'm not the best bird shooter in the world. :giggle:

This journal's features
The first feature is of those folks who strayed onto a deviation or two of mine and left a :+fav: or 2, the second is still another installment of "In Case You Missed It!" I've had some really good response to that particular feature, so as long as no one whines about me doing it, I'll continue it for a while.

Finally, I'd like to thank each and every person who came by my page and honored me with your view, and for any :+fav:'s that you have left. They are always appreciated and never taken for granted...

Enjoy the features!</i>

Thanks for the :+fav:!

In case you missed it!

LadyAliceofOz and I were sitting on what we call an "Observation Porch" just resting and watching the waves and I looked over at the chains holding up the swing we were sitting on. It struck me what the salt air and moisture had done to the chains, how it had corroded them and given then this almost wooden texture.  One of those cases where an everyday object can take on an artistic air.

This little Sulfur butterfly was a bit of a challenge. Butterflies tend to be solar powered, so when they're out in the warm bright sun they tend to be VERY active! He only sat for a few seconds at a time, not giving me a lot of chances. This was captured near the Motel's pool area on a potted hibiscus plant.

This was one of the first few sunsets I shot at Mexico Beach this year. One of those sunsets that were almost "surreal" with the brilliant red in the sky.

This lady was underneath the observation deck sunning herself and reading a book. Truth of the matter, I wasn't sure whether it was a "he" or a "she" when I shot the pic. :giggle: Later on she came up the stairs and it was pretty obvious.

This shot is proof that we don't really know for a fact how something will be received. :giggle: At the time I'm writing this, it has 20 :+fav:'s. It was probably the hardest shot to get in this particular feature as well!  In this particular shot we have the wave as well as the Sea Gull. No, I didn't "put" the Sea Gull there... It was shot this way.  I must have shot 20 exposures trying to get a gull flying with the waves underneath, like this!

As I mentioned in the Artists Comments, this got a bit scary to shoot. LadyAliceofOz and I went over to the beach with a whole loaf of moldy bread to feed to the gulls. She actually started feeding them a bit before I was ready, and they came in hard, hungry, and in mass! One or two even thought she was a convenient feeding post and tried to light on her head!  The thing I didn't mention, was that during this shot, a little old lady of 90+ years stepped out of her room at the motel and was excitedly clicking away with her point and shoot wearing a fuzzy pink bathrobe with her hair in curlers! I had on my long lens and Alice had on her 18~55mm. It would have been a better shot with Alice's camera than with mine. Afterwards, we both thought that each other had got one of the old gal... but no matter, if we gave her something to share with the grandchildren via e-mail, that was great!

This sunset is one of the ones I'm most proud of. To truly appreciate this one you have to take it to full view, and look at the detail. While shooting this particular evening, it occured to me that I couldn't really show what I was seeing.  I was shooting from a seawall, and the tide was fairly high so there wasn't much of a beach, but there was the light on the water, then the horizon, with the illuminated clouds, but above that, was the darker clouds and the sky poking through at the top! It occured to me that if you can shoot a panorama in landscape, why not shoot one in portrait?  This is actually 6 frames up and down. It's a 36.3 MB file, so if you're on dial up, I'm very sorry.

Another panorama shot. I may re-do this one. I rendered it in .jpg which will make it easier for you dial up folks but it sorta looses the detail out of it. It does give you an idea of the scope of the entire breadth of the sunset that evening though.

Just For Laughs!

"That wife of mine is a liar," said the angry husband to a sympathetic pal seated next to him in the bar. "How do you know?" the friend asked. "She didn't come home last night, and when I asked her where she'd been, she said she'd spent the night with her sister, Shirley." "So?" the friend replied. "So, she's a liar. I spent the night with her sister Shirley!"

In pharmacology, all drugs have a generic name, Tylenol is Acetaminophen, Advil is Ibuprofen, and so on. The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra, and announced today that they have settled on Mycoxafloppin.

A man walked into a therapist's office looking very depressed. "Doc, you've got to help me. I can't go on like this." "What's the problem?" the doctor inquired. "Well, I'm 35 years old and I still have no luck with the ladies. No matter how hard I try, I just seem to scare them away."

"My friend, this is not a serious problem. You just need to work on your self-esteem. Each morning, I want you to get up and run to the bathroom mirror. Tell yourself that you are a good person, a fun person, and an attractive person. But, say it with real conviction. Within a week you'll have women buzzing all around you."

The man seemed content with this advice and walked out of the office a bit excited. Three weeks later he returned with the same downtrodden expression on his face. "Did my advice not work?" asked the doctor.

"Oh, it worked alright. For the past several weeks I've enjoyed some of the best moments in my life with the most fabulous looking women." "So, what's your problem?"

"I don't have a problem," the man replied. "My wife does."

Strange Laws

In Lexington Kentucky...

By law, anyone who has been drinking is "sober" until he or she "cannot hold onto the ground."
Apparently one has to drink enough that they can defy gravity!

It is illegal to transport an ice cream cone in your pocket.
eeewwwww! I suppose this was a common problem? Maybe it was a way to keep certain parts of the body cool in summer??!!!!

In Louisiana...

It is illegal to rob a bank and then shoot at the bank teller with a water pistol.
Okay, so it's okay to rob the bank, and use a REAL gun?

In Maine...

Shotguns are required to be taken to church in the event of a Native American attack.
I doubt that's a real problem these days....

You may not step out of a plane in flight.
Not a bright idea either, at least not without a chute!

In California...

Sunshine is guaranteed to the masses.
Like the State dictates that?!

Animals are banned from mating publicly within 1,500 feet of a tavern, school, or place of worship.
Like the pigeons can read this goofy law?

Bathhouses are against the law.
 Wouldn't want folks to be clean now....

No vehicle without a driver may exceed 60 miles per hour.
I guess this must have been a problem at sometime, driverless cars speeding down the streets! :omg:

Women may not drive in a house coat.
But I suppose it's okay to drive in a bikini? :wtf:

It is a misdemeanor to shoot at any kind of game from a moving vehicle, unless the target is a whale.
All this time I thought Whales were protected!

A Tiny Bit About Me...

Just in case anybody wants to know. I'm 53 years old. I have no illusions regarding photography as a career. I was a professional wedding and portrait shooter many many years ago. I was trained by a PPAA award winning Professional Photographer. I now shoot primarily for fun, and enjoy helping others as I can. To dispel any misunderstandings, I've never referred to myself as an "artist".
To me, that is a professional designation.
I am a shooter, that's what I am.

I am a professional craftsperson, and so is my wife. My wife and I have run our own business for the past 31 years, and we manage to keep our heads afloat. I also do not discuss what I do for a living on DA, as this is my pleasure, and I prefer not to mix my profession with my pleasure.

My wife is: LadyAliceofOz:iconladyaliceofoz:
My daughter is Wyrdhaven:iconwyrdhaven:
She's doing some kickass artisan craft work there, check it out!</i>
My son, (my daughter's husband) is FlipWardDragon :iconflipwarddragon:

A Note TO All!

Anyone who has :+fav:ed my works...
:iconrudeboyskunkplz::iconrudeboyskunkplz2::iconrudeboyskunkplz3:

By the way, if I'm watching you, and you're watching me, I probably won't thank you for any :+fav:'s. I'll spend more time going through your gallery, or viewing your deviations, and talking with you via comments because I'm not spending time thanking for :+fav:'s! :giggle:

I also do not participate in the "Link System". I have no opposition to others participating. I just personally don't have the time to do so.

Also, this is a Politics, Religion, and Hate free zone. I have friends from all walks of life, all religious denominations, sects, you name it. In my journal features you're likely to find a Jew's deviation next to an Arabs, Black next to White and any combination in between.
One other note. I am a former Marine. It was an honor to serve my country.
I am proud of all service people around the world, who choose to serve their countries, past and present.
I have close friends who were Army Pathfinders, My Brother was Special Forces in Viet-Nam. My Mother was a WAVE (Navy WWII), My Father was also a Marine during WWII.
My son, (Wyrdhaven's husband) was Army Airborne during Desert Storm.
A particular deviant here that I watch is former Air Force, another is in the Navy. A close young friend of mine just joined the Coast Guard.
I entered the service in 1974 when the Navy & Marines no longer accepted would be young felons, and trouble makers and the Army no longer accepted losers and conscripts. Since that time in military history the services have learned that we're all pulling on the same rope. There's no room on my page for badmouthing any branch of the service. I refuse to engage in berating any branch of the United States Armed forces. We all served under the same flag :flagus:. If anyone chooses to berate any service, they will be blocked from my page.

There's nothing we can really do about those who hate. So don't spread it around here please! :D

Always loved the amusing USA Laws, shows they aren't reviewed very often...

Wonder if the UK has any amusing rules?
